Therapeutic stay

The Centre of Study and Research of this structure is committed to promoting an initiative that has as primary objective the social integration of people with disabilities, starting from a more simple and primitive concept ... nature and animals. The realization of this project has a particular focus on personal growth, to its full development, emphasizing the need to meet all the different needs of people in such a condition.

The project has as a primary goal the global integration of the disabled with a view to testing the training courses which are able to ensure continuity in the essential step between the world of education and social-work.

On such basis, the project has been carried out for the first time in the farm "La locanda dell’Asino d’oro" at Introdacqua (Aq) from 28/06/2010 to 04/07/2010; the participants were 15 members of  "S. Maria del Pozzo" aged from four to twenty years with various diseases (hydrocephalus secondary hemiparesis, hyperactivity, autism spectrum disorders, brain kinesipatia, behavioral disorder, immaturity relational, late maturing global, psychobehavioral instability , dystrophy, Klinefelter, Immature psychomotor, psychomotor retardation, muscular dystrophy).

The patients were accompanied by nine relatives.

Before starting, a training day was organized in the Clinical “S. Maria del Pozzo " under the supervision of  Dr. AM Terracciano, Luigi, Dr. Romano, Dr. Anthony Pepe, Dr. Enza Di Mauro, and all the relatives involved in the project.

The objective was to give clear and detailed reports on the entire project and how to use intervention and all the information material on the initiative, that was given to parents.

The first phase of the project was based on the behavior assessment each individual in different real life contexts, the functional use of the body was very important so as the group activities .

Initially, almost all showed an uncooperative behavior because they were in a different contexts from their daily life and involved in a diverse group by age and disease.

In fact, children / adolescents showed a weak ability to focus and to initiatives, why they weren’t able to suggest good proposals play-relational, or to identify difficult situations and its possible solutions, showing a low self-esteem in their abilities.

In the first moment, we have seen problems even during social occasions, especially at mealtimes at the table, because some children / teenagers refused the food that was offered, due to poor eating habits.

After this phase of adaptation, the group began to give positive responses, successfully participating to all activities of handcrafting, taste, rhythm with musical instruments of, they have created a peaceful situation, where everyone felt at ease, consolidating the social and interpersonal relationships.

The most important experience of the project was the work done with donkeys: at first, children / young people have shown fear and worry for this unknown animal, then graduatlly approached them  through exercises, have familiarized showing a strong emotional involvement.

In particular, the objectives have been achieved most successful:

  • strengthening and development of personal autonomy;
  • improvement of general dynamics coordination and of motility;
  • positive development of the interpersonal dynamics even in subjects with conduct disorder and relational, including the autistic spectrum.

The presence of parents has been productive and crucial for the success of the project, though at first they do not take reasonable educational conduct and social skills, towards their children

During the project, parents have begun a training program for personal growth in relationships M / F in order to positively change the relationship with their children.

This experience was emotionally important for all those who participated, because through empathy T / B / G, it was a formative moment and at the same time it allowed an adequate social integration, to enrich the lives of everyone .

Thus, in the positive influence of the project, it was decided to propose it again in future years, so that the rehabilitation crossed the boundaries of medicalization and becomes a learning process that improves the quality of life also in contexts outside the family and extra-institutional.
